The objectives are:
  • to provide modular postgraduate academic training programmes (MMTM) on transfusion medicine for restricted economy countries
  • to support restricted economy countries in developing safe, efficacious and sustainable blood supply systems
  • to develop research programmes for transfusion medicine related health sciences
  • to serve as a reference organisation to WHO, World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH) and International Consortium for Blood Safety (ICBS)

The research programmes focus on Transfusion Medicine related Health Sciences

-Estimating national needs for blood; developing models

-Cost calculation models in transfusion medicine; developing models

-Key elements of infrastructure to allow safe and sustainable blood supply systems

-Logistics of demand and supply in transfusion medicine; regular and

special conditions

- Key elements of infrastructure to allow safe and sustainable hospital

transfusion practices

- Implementation of guidelines and standards; factors that determine

sustained effect on current practices (both in procurement and clinical

use)

- Cost effectiveness of introduction of advanced TTI marker technology in

developing countries

The two weeks will be spend on the design of a research project, to be chosen from one of the above themes.

The fellow starts with selection of one of the themes; this is followed by a set up of the project proposal for the research theme - introduction; objectives and rationale; hypothesis and literature review; methodological approach, study design; ethical and legal considerations; timelines and indicators; data management and analysis; presentation and outcomes.

At the end of the two weeks a draft document of the IRF period with the design of the chosen research project has to be prepared and discussed for its learning outcomes.
