Workshop: Endovascular Treatment of Aneurysms
Endovascular treatment of aneurysms has become a valid alternative to open repair and in a way has revolutionized the whole vascular surgery. This new treatment modality has also resulted in a closer cooperation between vascular surgeons and interventional radiologists in many countries. Many vascular patients with both dilating and narrowing disease, per definition at high risk for open repair, can now be treated by endovascular means, thus avoiding major surgery. In this workshop the pathophysiology of aneurysms will be reviewed and the different endovascular techniques, both in elective and acute setting, will be demonstrated. Complications inherent to the new technique will be addressed and discussed. Over the past years the technique has evolved quickly thanks to improved materials and can now be regarded as first choice option for many patients. In Groningen, we have focused on the endovascular treatment of more complex aneurysms, such a suprarenal and even thoraco-abdominal aneurysms.A hands-on demonstration and deployment of several devices will conclude the workshop, in order to give the participants a clear inside of these new treatment modalities.
