Workshop: BioOptical Imaging

This workshop describes an overview of the current biooptical imaging technologies and area’s of application in various research fields. Besides bioluminescence imaging (BLI - predominantly relating to real-time detection of gene expression), fluorescent imaging modalities will also be highlighted. Furthermore, accepted imaging modalities (as well as anatomical as functional imaging capabilities) will be discussed (e.g. microCT, microPET, MRI, ultrasound) for co-registration in biooptical imaging. By using actual experimental data obtained by several collaborating research groups at the UMCG and abroad (Stanford/Harvard), the methodology of biooptical imaging will be presented and its possibilities and limitations clearly outlined. Important aspects like ex vivo validation and quantification are part of the methodologies. In The Netherlands, bioluminescent experiments cannot be carried out without permits for working with genetically modified organisms, some practical tips-and-tricks will be provided. Finally, preliminary data are presented of new biooptical imaging developments in the area of intraoperative imaging as a tool in the clinic.
