SCIENCE UP THE WORLD 15TH INTERNATIONAL STUDENT CONGRESS OF MEDICAL SCIENCES JUNE 3RD - 6TH 2008

Lab-visit: Anatomy of the Heart

The research group developed a Pulsatile Catheter Pump (PUCA pump), a left ventricular assist device that could stabilize patients suffering from cardiogenic shock. During this 1 ½ hour course participants will dissect a swine heart. Special attention will be paid to the morphology of the coronary artery system and the diffrent heart valves. Working mechanisms of Intra Aortic balloon pumping and mechanical ventricular assist devices will be explained in relation to left ventricular function, aorta, pulmonary artery, atrial and ventricular cannulation.
