Lab visits

The UMCG exploits several lab facilities for research purposes. During the workshops, the labs will be dedicated to provide insight in both the organizational aspects of our facilities as well as the theoretical background of several research techniques. During the visits, interesting demonstrations will be held. In some of the visits, it is even possible to actively participate in some of the experiments!

Lab-visits 2008:

Multi-joint dynamics and applications: CAREN is an acronym for “Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment”. It is a combination of virtual reality elements in which we can analyze movement control of  subjects. Especially the sensory input can be manipulated, both mechanically and optically.

The application of microarrays in the analysis of genome integrity: DNA-microarrays are small glass-ware chips with on their surface an array of a large quantity of DNA probes. Microarrays are used in several types of genome-wide screening experiments.

Proteomics & Genomics: Recently the group Integrative genomics and Proteomics moved to a shared location with an up-to-date laboratory. The central aim of the Integrative Genomics research group is to do functional genetic studies for multiple diseases including diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Functional MRI: Clinically, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-scanners have been used since the early 1980’s to visualize different tissues in the body (brain, bone, arteries, heart) with high spatial resolution. An important application is the diagnosis of tumors.

Anatomy of the Heart: The research group developed a Pulsatile Catheter Pump (PUCA pump), a left ventricular assist device that could stabilize patients suffering from cardiogenic shock. During this 1 ½ hour course participants will dissect a swine heart.
