Travelling
Flying to the Netherlands
In the Netherlands we have one major airport near Amsterdam called Schiphol Airport. From there on you can travel to Groningen by train. The railway station is located underneath the Arrival Hall. More information on Schiphol Airport can be found at their website here .
Arrival at Amsterdam Airport
After your arrival at Schiphol Airport (Amsterdam), follow the signs directing you toward the railway station. At the counter, ask for a one-way ticket to Groningen (about 28 euro) and ask when the next intercity-train to Groningen is leaving. The counter is open from 6.30-21.00h. You have to buy a ticket before you enter the train!!
The ticket is generally valid at the day of purchase, unless you buy an open-date ticket. If you buy an open-date ticket, make sure you stamp it before entering the train, by using the yellow stamping machines. Otherwise you will have to pay a penalty in the train.
On the travel day, you can take any train, embark and disembark on the route, all provided that you complete your trip on the travel day, and you follow the shortest route.
The intercity train from Schiphol to Groningen will take you directly to Groningen. Make sure you get in the right half of the train because the other half will take you to Leeuwarden!!! Usually, wagons going to Groningen are at the front of the train. There is an indication at the outside of each wagon, that corresponds with the end destination of that wagon. You must take a train with Groningen indicated. If you are not sure, you can ask the conductors.
The train leaves at :20 and :50. Trains leaving at :50 don't go further than Amersfoort, here you will have to switch trains. The train to Groningen stops at the other side, but again, make sure you get in at the right half!
An up to date train schedule can be found at the site of the Dutch Railway. (will open in a new window)
