The Netherlands

There are a few things you should realize when you arrive in a foreign country. Many differences with your own country exist, for example culture, habits, and climate. In the Netherlands the temperature varies between -10 (minimum in wintertime) and 30 (maximum in summertime) degrees Celsius. It is often very windy and it rains a lot, try to keep this in mind when packing your clothes. It is a good idea to bring an umbrella or a raincoat. In June, the temperature is on average 18 degrees Celsius.

Language

Dutch is the language we speak in the Netherlands. You may try to learn some basic Dutch, but above all, make sure that you have a good knowledge of English so that the communication won't be impeded by language problems. Most Dutch people have a fairly good knowledge of the English language.

Money

Compared to your country, Holland may be expensive. Take that into consideration when you are arranging your financial matters. Changing or withdrawing money is no problem at all; there are many banks and post-offices that will be glad to help you. Opening hours: most banks and post-offices are open on weekdays from 9-17.00 and are closed on Saturdays.

Shops

Shops are open 9-18.00h from Tuesday till Friday (Thursday shops stay open until 21.00). On Monday they are open 11-18.00h. Saturday, shops are open 9-17.00h. On Sunday, most shops are closed, except for once a month.
Supermarkets are generally open from 8-20.00h Monday-Friday, and 8-18.00h on Saturday. In the hospital there is a supermarket (on your right hand standing in the entrance hall) which is even opened on Sundays. Markets are organized at the Vismarkt in the centre of Groningen on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. You can have your laundry done at a number of places, but usually there is a washing machine available at your accommodation.
