SCIENCE UP THE WORLD 15TH INTERNATIONAL STUDENT CONGRESS OF MEDICAL SCIENCES JUNE 3RD - 6TH 2008

Research Stand

During the congress you are able to get in touch with the Graduate Schools of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). The Graduate Schools are responsible for the research-oriented Master programs (resulting in a Master of Science degree, MSc) and the PhD programs (resulting in a Doctor of Medical Science degree, PhD). The interdisciplinary character of the research and scientific education at the UMCG play an important role within the Graduate Schools. The Graduate Schools give both national and international students the opportunity to perform high quality research in Groningen.

At the research stand every Graduate School and interfaculty institute has his own stand. Here you will find information about the different research institutes of the UMCG and their research projects. You can talk with researchers about the research fields in the UMCG. Handouts with contact information from all the different research institutes will be available.

In conclusion, the research stand is a valuable medium to gain any of the following:

  • Information about the different kinds of research in Groningen.
  • Contact with researchers from a specific field of Medicine you are interested in.
  • Information about the possibilities of performing research besides your study.
  • Find out if research is something for you.
  • Information about how you can start your research at the UMCG as a foreign student.

Research schools / Graduate schools / Interfaculty Institutes

GUIDE (Groningen University Institute for Drug Exploration)

The graduate school GUIDE is a graduate school devoted to the elucidation of disease mechanisms and the development of novel, innovative drugs. In GUIDE, multidisciplinary teams, situated at the UMCG and the Research Institute of Pharmacy (GRIP) combine forces, yielding an unique research and teaching environment. An important asset of the graduate school GUIDE is the integration of clinical, biomedical and pharmaceutical research, which promotes the education of researchers with a keen eye on the complete spectrum of biomedical research, drug development and drug innovation. Research Institutes:
- GRIAC: Groningen Research Institute for Asthma and COPD
- GIKD: Groningen Research Institute for Kidney Diseases
- CVC: Cardiovascular Centre
- CLDS: Centre for Liver, Digestive and Metabolic Diseases
- TRIO: Transplantation, Immunology and Inflammation
- NNOC: Northern Netherlands Oncology Centre
Topmaster: Medical & Pharmaceutical Drug Innovation

BCN (Groningen Graduate School for Behavioral and Cognitive Neurosciences)

The School of Behavioral and Cognitive Neurosciences is a university research and training center at the University of Groningen for the study of normal and pathological processes of the nervous system, cognition and behavior. Some 200 senior researchers, 20 postdoctoral researchers, nearly 150 Ph.D. students and momentarily 27 Research Master students from five faculties within the University of Groningen participate in BCN.  Research Institutes
- Institute for Neuroprotection and Neurodegenerative diseases (INND)
- Institute for Motor Control, Learning and Recovery
- Social Brain Research Institute

BCN Research Master: “Behavioral and Cognitive Neurosciences”

Our training program for master students consists of 3 tracks: students specialize in either bahavior, cognition or molecular & clinical neurosciences, and simultaneously get a broad knowledge and understanding of the topics interconnecting these three research fields.

BMSA (Institute for Biomedical engineering, Materials Science and Application)

The use of biomaterial implants has become an integral part of modern health care in the Western world. Modern health care could not even exist without biomaterials and the restoration of function after oncological surgery, trauma or wear due to ageing. With the average life expectancy approaching 80 years, the use of biomaterials will increase due to demands of the aging population for a high quality of life.  The BMSA was raised on October 8th, 1997 as one of the institutes of the Faculty of Medical Sciences and the University Hospital Groningen. The institutes primary objective is to bring together pre-clinical and clinical research groups. From the start, its mission statement was formulated as follows: To establish a center of expertise for the entire stage of biomedical materials science and its application involving basic materials science, medical product development and clinical evaluation that will contribute to the long-lasting well-being of patients in need of biomaterials implants and extra-corporal support systems.

SHARE (Graduate School for Health Research)

SHARE-research concentrates on the fields of 'Quality of Life' and 'Quality of Healthcare'. The ultimate goal of our research is to optimize patients quality of life by improving care, and where possible intervening directly on factors that are a threat to their quality of life. Our research staff has diverse professional backgrounds. Disciplines involved are: public health, health psychology, family practice, rehabilitation, epidemiology, clinical pharmacology, and medical ethics. See the SHARE website for information on current vacancies.

SHARE-Research master Clinical and Psychosocial Epidemiology: The programme focuses on epidemiology in the area of chronic diseases, with an emphasis on psychosocial factors including quality of life, public mental health and psychiatric epidemiology. The students are guided from basic concepts through advanced issues to the completion of a Masters thesis. The curriculum moves from providing basic knowledge of clinical and psychosocial epidemiology in mandatory group-oriented modules to individual Masters thesis programs with a tailored selection of specialized modules.

SHARE - PhD training and supervision program. PhD students are invited to attend:
* courses in research tools: methodology; statistics, data collection, and management
* courses in general research skills: program management, presenting, publishing
* courses to expand and deepen their knowledge on: medical subjects, health psychology, health services
research, pharmacoepidemiology, health economics, etc.

Science Shop (in Dutch)

The Science Shop Medicine and Health Care works on request from institutions and organizations in various social fields, for example patient- and consumer organizations, environmental groups, and the social service sector.
The Science Shop Health Care is the sensor with society of the UMCG. Each year many questions are asked 'from outside', some of which do result in research projects, which are carried out by senior (medical) students as part of their scientific training. Very often the research topics concern diseases, healthcare problems or social problems with low 'market value'. For example: health care for mentally retarded people, sexual abuse / domestic violence of/against women, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, orphan diseases etc. But research is also carried out in area's in which the regular health science has not paid much attention to so far. Some examples of this latter category are research projects concerning the psycho-social consequences ('Quality of life') of Tinnitus, Facial Paralysis, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Celiac Disease etc. All the reports of the Science Shop are published on their website and can be downloaded freely.

International School of Hepatology GISH-T

At the moment there is no information about this school, because of a reorganization.

Junior Scientific Masterclass

The Junior Scientific Masterclass offers an infrastructure for medical students who are interested in doing research. By offering extra courses and research places, students have the opportunity to get an ‘Honour’-degree for their research project during the Bachelor programme. They also provide a MD/PhD programme where students can get their PhD degree during their internships. This Masterclass is only for students from Groningen.
